Winterley Pool
Description
Winterley is situated alongside the A534 just through Haslington, and
consists of two smallish waters, an 8 acre specimen lake and a 4
acre match lake which both contain good numbers of fish including
pike to 20lb+, perch to 3lb and eels to 4lb. It is in the specimen
lake that the majority of the predator species are found but match
anglers have also caught pike and eels from the smaller lake. If
its the better fish that you are after then you would be better
concentrating your efforts on the larger lake. Situated at the bottom
of the specimen lake is is a large island, to the left of this is
some of the deeper water the rest of the lake tends to be shallower
and consistent with depths from 3' to 8'. Most of this shallow water
can be found in the bay next to the house or to the right of the
island, where it is surrounded by reeds-good for pike here. Water
clarity can vary from visit to visit but is for the majority of
the time peaty in colour.
Tactics
All methods and baits tend to work well at Winterley, during the
warmer months it is nice to walk around the lakes lure fishing for
the pike and perch. The size of fish caught tends to be small 3
- 9lb but you will find that there can be plenty of action, especially
around the shallow bay or reeds. Small spinners take quite a few
of the smaller perch, but if
you use a small shallow diver you will get plenty of follows and
sometimes hook into one of the bigger fish. When bait fishing for
pike all methods work well including lives fished in various methods
from popped up to paternostered. Baits must be caught on site. Drifted
baits produce a few fish throughout the season. One thing I have
noticed is that pike seem to favour baits fished high and live in
warmer months and dead and deep in the winter.
